What You Will Contribute To A Biotechnology Company
A Biotechnology Company is seeking a Director, Intellectual Property based in the Bay Area. This position initially reports to the General Counsel and is located in Redwood City, California. The Director, Intellectual Property will be the first point of contact for all legal matters as a trusted advisor and partner for the Bay Area Institute. Additional responsibilities are as follows:
  • Handle legal matters relating to patentability, invention capture, freedom to operate, due diligence assessments, and IP transaction agreements including licensing, collaboration agreements, and strategic commercial agreements
  • Prepare global patent applications and over time prosecute and maintain global patent portfolios
  • Provide advice and counsel on trade secrets, copyrights and trademarks
  • Thrive as part of a global IP team and support projects and assignments across all sites as needed
  • Foster a collaborative partnership with other legal, business, and science functions to provide advice and strategic counsel on IP matters
  • Maintain current knowledge of IP case law and emerging industry trends
  • Find creative solutions to resolve business issues and balance competing priorities while managing legal and operational risks
  • Comfortably navigate ambiguity while providing pragmatic and actionable legal advice
  • Manage outside counsel work product and budget
  • Be a model of high integrity
  • Other assignments and responsibilities as assigned by your manager

Our mission is to restore cell health and resilience to reverse disease, injury, and disabilities that occur throughout life. We are seeking an energetic and creative patent lawyer or patent agent to join a dynamic legal department that enables highly collaborative organizations organization to do great science and translate that science into novel therapeutics.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • 7+ (Director) years of experience as a patent prosecutor.
  • Bachelor's degree required in biology, chemistry, or related sciences. An advanced degree in a relevant technical area is a plus.
  • Registered before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
  • If US attorney,
    • Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school is required.
    • Admission to the California Bar or the ability to qualify as Registered In-House Counsel.
  • Crafts innovative, business-oriented solutions, and excel both in leading and assisting in executing those solutions.
  • Able to work collaboratively, think practically, and use sound judgment.
  • Willingness to tackle matters of first impression and outside of areas of expertise.
  • Attentive to detail, willing to roll up your sleeves to get into the details and drive creative solutions, while also being able to think on the fly and drive effective decision making.
  • Adept at working independently and reliably under tight timeframes in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Global patent experience a plus.
  • Pharma or tech industry experience is a plus.
