Description:

A Government Entity seeks to employ a full-time staff attorney with strong transactional skills to work in the Departmental Counsel division. A minimum of two years' experience in varied public law work including contracts, Code Enforcement, Nuisance Abatement, and the Brown Act is preferred. The candidate must be comfortable and confident appearing before local boards and commissions in a variety of administrative settings. Responsibilities include providing advice to all City departments, boards and commissions; preparing legal opinions, contracts, ordinances and resolutions; and representing the City in both civil and administrative proceedings.

Examples of Duties:
  • Provide City departments with legal advice and opinions regarding municipal, State and Federal law.
  • Provide legal research, advice and draft a variety of municipal documents, permits, licenses and memoranda.
  • Draft a variety of municipal ordinances and resolutions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested, including representing the City in occasional administrative hearings or litigation matters.

Requirements to File
Graduation from law school accredited by the ABA or the California Committee of Bar Examiners. A member of the California State Bar in good standing with no prior history of discipline.
  • Two years of legal experience working as an attorney.
  • A valid California Class C driver's license.

Selection Procedure:

  • Current and detailed knowledge of Municipal Law including administrative and civil proceedings with an emphasis in municipal contracting.
  • Clear and concise oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and ensure timely completion.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision or instruction.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook and Windows 10.
  • Ability to interact professionally with all levels of personnel.
  • Excellent attendance, professional appearance and demeanor.

This is an "at-will" position. The appointed candidate will serve at the discretion of the City Attorney, and can be released at any time. In such an event, the candidate is not afforded the right to any appeal or grievance procedure under any rule or regulation of the City of Long Beach.
