Role of The Position
A Public Land-Grant Research University requires each student to complete a mandatory community service requirement by teaching free legal education courses in the school's Christine Smith Community Service Program. The Coordinator of the Christine Smith Community Service Program supervises students teaching the free legal education courses and works with the members of the Community Service Committee, Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, and Nevada Legal Services in developing courses, setting program policy, and collaborating with community partners and attorneys to develop and update course materials.
  • The Coordinator instructs the law students on policies and procedures, oversees teaching, gives feedback to the students after each class and participates in and is present at each orientation and debriefing session. The Coordinator will be responsible for a number of scheduled community service classes and will be available to act as a substitute supervisor or instructor when community partner attorneys are unavailable.
  • Provides guidance, counseling and mentorship to students teaching the community service classes.
  • The Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that program materials are accurate, current, and that students are communicating reliable information.
  • The Coordinator collaborates with community partners to develop, review, and update course material.
  • The Coordinator assesses the community service classes and the program; works with partners to develop new programs and refine existing ones; works with law school administration on managing and scheduling programs; conducts orientation and debriefing sessions; reports to law school administration on the activities of the program and assessments, and undertakes other tasks relating to the community service program.
  • During the intersessions, the coordinator will instruct classes in the absence of students.
  • Working knowledge of computer systems, software applications, and video communication software (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, Zoom, etc.)
  • Knowledge of professional rules of responsibility applicable to lawyers in the state of Nevada and other jurisdictions.
  • Familiarity with the challenges of law practice and client representation.
  • Familiarity with concepts and authorities discussed in community service classes.
  • Law school expectations in terms of student performance and professional behavior.
  • Ability to edit and proofread documents, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships in a diverse environment, and to work well as a member of a team as well as independently.
  • The ability to identify and resolve complicated and sensitive issues creatively and with professional discretion

Minimum Qualifications:
This position requires a JD from an ABA-accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and 3 years of comparable professional and supervisory experience. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start date.
  • Practicing attorney with an active Nevada State Bar License, and in good standing with the Nevada State Bar
  • The ability to identify and resolve complicated and sensitive issues creatively and with professional discretion
  • Knowledge of computer systems, software applications, and video communications software (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, Zoom, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 5-7 years experience
  • 3-5 years supervisory experience
  • 1-3 years management experience
