We are a dynamic and growing law firm and a candidate for this position must be smart, hardworking, detail-oriented and have a great personality. The ability to think ahead to assist the team and care about the firm's relationship with clients is both good business and second nature for the candidate we are seeking. You should be able to demonstrate good judgment, the ability to prioritize your activities with minimal supervision and coordinate cheerfully with your fellow team members. While full-time is preferred, there is potential for this to be a part-time position. The firm's office is in Lansing, but remote work is possible for an attorney who is the right fit and who can travel to Lansing once or twice per month.

Responsibilities:
  • The Civil Appellate Attorney shall perform legal services including legal research; drafting motions and briefs.
  • The Civil Appellate Attorney shall appear on behalf of and advocate for clients at oral argument in appellate courts.
  • When delegated by the Owner or by personal request, the Civil Appellate Attorney may prospect for new clients through marketing, networking, writing articles, and speaking engagements.
  • Civil Appellate Attorney will supervise and mentor junior attorneys and law clerks in the firm who are working on civil appeals.
  • Civil Appellate Attorney will conduct regular file reviews and other procedural duties as required by firm policy.
  • Civil Appellate Attorney will work mostly on Civil appeals (Ex: Contract, Probate, Real Estate, Personal Injury, etc.), but will be willing to work on other types of appeals if the need arises.
  • Civil Appellate Attorney must be willing and available at times to work outside normal office hours in order to meet deadlines.
  • Civil Appellate Attorney will proactively set case strategy and initiate actions that will benefit the client rather than awaiting instructions.
  • Civil Appellate Attorney will work in cooperation with firm staff to efficiently, cost-effectively and promptly deliver the client work product.

Qualifications:
  • Civil Appellate Attorney must have a law degree from an accredited law school and be licensed or in the process of obtaining a license in Michigan.
  • 5-10 years of experience, preferably in a private practice setting.
  • Exceptional Legal Writing/Argument skills.
  • Excellent speaking skills/confidence in speaking for Oral Arguments.
  • Willingness to continue learning and growing in firm practice areas.
