A Non-Profit Organization is a Seattle-based non-profit organization that works to achieve accessible and affordable health care for all through policy and legal advocacy, public education and support to community-based organizations in Washington state. Founded in 1999, A Non-Profit Organization is a leader of consumer advocacy on health care issues.

We are seeking an experienced Attorney or Senior Attorney with a strong commitment to social and racial justice to engage in policy and legal advocacy for health care consumers. The ideal candidate will be ready to dive into an exciting portfolio that focuses on equitable access to public health care programs and benefits, with specific attention to structural inequities such as those that arise due to aging, disability, and language or communications assistance needs. The work will be based in Washington state with opportunities to make an impact on local, state, and national levels.

You Will:
  • Work with NoHLA attorneys, staff and other health advocates to develop and advocate for innovative strategies and policy solutions at the state and local levels.
  • Advocate at the state and national levels to influence policies concerning access to health care and the rights of health care consumers.
  • Coordinate and lead initiatives in collaboration with other health advocates, participate in health care coalitions, task forces and working groups.
  • Research and draft position papers, reports and materials aimed at policymakers and the general public with a focus on health equity and access to care.
  • Respond to inquiries and requests for assistance and case consultations from legal services and private bar members, health and community advocates and policymakers.
  • Prepare and deliver trainings, public presentations, and media on health care-related issues, accessible to a wide and diverse audience.
  • Engage in legal and legislative research, litigation, and amicus briefing.
  • Assist with organizational fundraising and reporting related to the above activities.

Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school
  • Admission to Washington State Bar or willingness to take next bar exam
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with staff, lawyers, advocates, coalition partners, community groups, and others
  • Strong interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills with a variety of audiences
  • Strong writing and analytical skills, including capacity for independent research
  • Strong organizational, time management, and project management skills – including the ability to set project goals and manage projects to successful completion
  • Knowledge of health care and coverage laws, policies and programs, including Medicaid and Medicare
  • Lived or work experience with diverse communities
  • Commitment to advocacy to challenge systemic inequities to achieve equitable access to affordable, quality health care for all
  • Proficiency with workplace technology, such as Microsoft Office Suite, Google tools, and Zoom/Teams
  • Ability to engage in occasional work-related travel, primarily in Seattle and Washington state

Preference will be given to candidates with:
  • At least 5 years' legal or policy experience (including some experience in health care, public benefits, and/or civil rights advocacy)
  • Experience in litigation, representation of low-income individuals or communities of color, health policy, and/or public health
  • Oral and written proficiency in one or more non-English languages
