Duties:
The Caltrans San Diego Legal Office is looking for a well-qualified and highly motivated attorneys. Practice areas handled by the San Diego Legal Office that the candidate may handle includes: Tort, Real Property, Environmental, Construction Arbitration, Contracts, Employment, Appellate and Transactional law practices. Caltrans' Legal Division is a full-service law office - our attorneys represent Caltrans in State and Federal courts in all phases of litigation and trial work and advise and assist Caltrans in all facets of its operations. Litigation experience, including experience with legal research, law and motion, discovery, and trial and appellate work is preferred but not required.

The Caltrans San Diego Legal Office is one of five offices comprising the Caltrans Legal Division (Sacramento/HQ, Oakland, Los Angeles, Fresno, and San Diego). All offices work together as one Caltrans Legal Division. We have statewide committees with members from each office to facilitate information sharing and networking. We also have statewide legal workshops to provide opportunities for all our attorneys to develop statewide relationships and learn about the Legal Division's areas of practice.

Caltrans has a hybrid telework program. Attorneys may telework from home for a portion of the week.

Caltrans Deputy Attorneys may receive promotions in place to Attorney III or Attorney IV based on available funds, successful performance, and compliance with labor union requirements.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Attorney Exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions:
Position located in San Diego, San Diego County.

While at their base of operation, employees will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial light. However, due to periodic problems with the heating and air conditioning, the building temperature may fluctuate. Will have to perform work duties in different court rooms throughout the state and therefore, this position does require travel.

Telework is available for a portion of the workweek.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
