Primary Function:
The Associate General Counsel – Labor & Employment and Education will serve as legal counsel to A Private Research University and its affiliates on matters pertaining to labor, employment and higher education-related laws and regulations under federal, Pennsylvania and New Jersey law

Essential Functions:
  • Provide legal counsel on federal and state labor, employment and higher education-related laws and regulations in the higher education and health care setting, including without limitation on issues related to all types of discrimination and harassment, wrongful discharge, employment contracts, independent contractor analyses, restrictive covenant analyses, disabilities and related accommodations, leaves of absence (including under the Family and Medical Leave Act and similar state laws), wage and hour, internal investigations, human resources issues, labor relations, employee benefits, workplace safety, workers' compensation and work-related immigration issues, as well as on issues related to student admissions, financial aid, charitable donations, planned giving, accreditation, academic program development, program integrity, Title IX, international programs, athletics, governance, immigration, housing, academic affairs, student affairs and student privacy.
  • Work collaboratively with appropriate University personnel to develop, draft, review and revise contracts, policies, procedures and other documents related to labor and employment issues and Jefferson's higher education mission.
  • Identify legal risks and propose mitigation strategies.
  • Represent Jefferson before federal, state and local fair employment agencies, including but not necessarily limited to the EEOC, Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations, the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights, and state and federal Departments of Education.
  • Work as liaison between Jefferson and outside counsel, and oversee outside counsel, with respect to litigation involving labor, employment and higher education-related issues and other labor and employment or higher education-related projects for which outside counsel may be necessary or advisable.
  • Keep abreast of current legal landscape and developments concerning labor, employment and higher education-related laws and regulations.
  • Provide training programs to appropriate University personnel on issues related to labor, employment and higher education laws and regulations, and related best practices.
  • Respond to requests for legal advice and services from Jefferson personnel and other members of the Jefferson legal team on a wide variety of legal issues.
  • Interact with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson and its Code of Conduct.
  • Demonstrate excellent judgment, productivity, interpersonal skills and ability to work professionally under pressure and in a fast-paced and high-energy work environment.
  • Demonstrate outstanding written and oral communication skills and a strong commitment to teamwork, client relations and collaboration.

Qualifications:
Educational/Training Requirements:
  • J.D. degree.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registration:
Pennsylvania bar license (or waiver into the PA bar within a year of hire). New Jersey bar license is not required but is a plus.

Experience Requirements:
Eight (8) years of legal experience in labor and employment and higher education law, including litigation and consulting experience. Experience should include time at a top law firm, the legal department of a non-profit institution of higher education or healthcare, or both. Honors and/or journal experience preferred.
