Description:
Employee counsels and advises UF students on a variety of legal matters that include, but are not limited to:- Landlord-tenant
- Consumer, criminal
- Traffic
- Dissolution of marriage
- Adoption
- Name change
- Sealing/expunction of criminal records
- Property damage
- Non-profit student group entity formation and EIN assistance
- Other general civil matters
- The attorney communicates with clients, opposing parties, attorneys and others to negotiate resolutions to the legal matters being handled.
- The attorney, when appropriate, represents UF students in litigation in accordance with program guidelines in landlord-tenant, dissolution of marriage, adoption, name change, and sealing/expunction of criminal records matters.
- Employee supervises the functionality of the front desk reception area including the full-time staff/administrative assistants and student staff.
- Employee also reviews applications for services to determine eligibility for services under the SLS Plan and office policies.
- Employee works with the law school and pre-law programs to implement, expand and develop extern, pro bono, intern and volunteer programs to meet the needs of the students and Student Legal Services.
- Employee supervises the volunteers, law clerks, externs, interns and all other students working at Student Legal Services, including bar references, employment verification and letters of recommendation.
- Employee oversees the marketing and outreach efforts to UF students, faculty and staff that includes supervision of the marketing interns, implementation of a marketing plan and development of marketing materials.
- Employee develops, implements and maintains the departmental assessment initiatives, including generating monthly and yearly reports.
- Employee oversees the development, implementation and maintenance of the departmental database and website, including generating statistical data.
- Employee develops and presents legal educational opportunities and outreach programs, including presentations to large groups of UF students.
J.D. or LL.B. and four years of appropriate experience. Must be a member of the Florida Bar or become a member within twelve months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with administration and practicing law in a not for profit legal environment such as SLS.
- Experience with UF policies and procedures relevant to SLS.
- Proficient in MS Word and Outlook.
- Ability to communicate and negotiate successfully with opposing parties.
- Ability to work cooperatively in a small office environment.
- Demonstrable patience and consideration in helping students from diverse backgrounds deal with legal issues.
