The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University.

A Law School invites applications from candidates to teach in our Academic Success program (“ASP”) and our Legal Research and Writing program (“LRW”) beginning on July 1, 2024. The position is a full-time, 12-month faculty appointment, and the successful candidate's duties will consist of 75% teaching and 25% administration. In terms of teaching, the successful candidate will teach three courses per year: two in LRW and one in ASP. In terms of administration, the successful candidate will likewise serve as the Associate Director of Academic Success Program, performing the duties listed below.

Legal Writing Lecturer
The LRW program consists of Legal Process I (predictive analysis, 3 credit hours) in the fall semester and Legal Process II (persuasive analysis, 3 credit hours) in the spring. Whereas most members of the LRW faculty teach four sections total each year (i.e., two sections of Legal Process I and two sections of Legal Process II), the successful candidate for this position will teach a half-load of two Legal Process sections each year.

Associate Director of Academic Success Program

The Associate Director of ASP develops, administers, and assesses the bar preparation program and makes additions and modifications to the program, focusing on initiatives to increase bar passage rates.

Among other things, the Associate Director will be responsible for the following:
  • Administering aspects of bar examination preparation services for the law school's students and graduates, including teaching and teaching the law school's bar preparation course;
  • Compiling and analyzing bar examination data relating to graduates' performance;
  • Providing individualized tutoring, mentoring, and counseling of students and graduates to prepare them for the bar examination;
  • Monitoring bar-takers' compliance with commercial bar preparation study programs;
  • Maintaining expertise in all aspects of the bar examination with particular emphasis on the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) and the NextGen Bar Exam; and
  • Regularly assessing the quality of the bar preparation program and making modifications to it to ensure the program's effectiveness in preparing students for the bar exam.

Appointment Type
The successful candidate will be hired at the rank of Lecturer and is eligible for promotion and long-term contracts, pursuant to the University's promotion guidelines for non-tenure track faculty members. Lecturers participate in all aspects of law school life, advise student organizations, serve on committees, and vote on all matters other than those involving hiring, tenure, promotion, and retention of tenure-track faculty. Lecturers are also eligible to receive professional development funding to support their teaching and service goals.

Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a JD from an ABA-accredited law school and must be admitted to the practice of law. The College is likewise seeking candidates with a passion for teaching legal writing and analysis in a way that connects deeply to law practice and bar exam success as well as an ability to work empathetically and patiently with both students and graduates. Successful applicants should have an impressive academic background and a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and service. Significant professional experience, preferably in the area of legal education, is also desirable.
