The AC is responsible for assisting the AGC in managing the legal affairs of West Virginia United Health System, Inc. This responsibility includes daily interaction with employees of WVUHS and its related entities, outside retained counsel, opposing counsel, personnel of administrative agencies and court personnel. This position reports to the AGC and AVP/Senior Litigation Counsel.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education, Certification, Experience, And/or Licensure:
Juris Doctorate or Equivalent Degree

West Virginia Bar membership or eligibility to obtain WV bar membership within 90 days of employment

Experience:
Three (3) years prior experience in litigation

  • Provides day-to-day legal representation to WVUHS and its related entities in employment matters, including employment litigation, administrative proceedings, open unasserted and asserted claims and open suits, including claims and cases.
  • Performs designated tasks in employment claims and cases and in employment-related general liability claims and cases.
  • Conducts employee and witness interviews in preparation defense of employment claims and cases.
  • Performs legal research and prepares legal memoranda addressing legal issues presented in matters and cases involving WVUHS and its related entities and employees.
  • Prepares case summaries, pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses and other matter or case-related materials to provide effective legal representation to WVUHS and its related entities and employees.
  • Participates in planning and executing discovery plans, alternative dispute resolution, hearings, and trial strategies for claims and cases.
  • Interviews and prepares witnesses for case development, discovery, depositions, administrative hearings, and/or trial testimony.
  • Appears as counsel on behalf of WVUHS and its related entities and employees at discovery depositions, administrative hearings, mediations, hearings and trials, either independently or with AGC.
  • Provides assistance to Associate Litigation Counsel and AVP/Senior Litigation Counsel in dealing with legal issues, including but not limited to, conducting legal research, fact-gathering and other investigatory activities, development and implementation of discovery plans and responses, including electronic discovery.
  • Assists with policy review and development, employee education
  • Assists outside counsel retained by AVP/Sr. Litigation Counsel or General Counsel with case-related tasks and serves as a liaison between outside counsel and WVUHS and its related entities and employees
  • Other duties as assigned by AGC, ALC or AVP/Senior Litigation Counsel

  • Participates in planning and implementing change and maintaining and improving productivity through attendance and participation in staff meetings, task forces, standing committees, special projects and discussions with supervisors.
