Description:

Government Bureau/Neighborhood Renewal Division
Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell is looking for a highly motivated attorney to join the Neighborhood Renewal Division as an Assistant Attorney General. The Neighborhood Renewal Division seeks to partner with municipalities across the Commonwealth to address critical housing issues in the Commonwealth by renewing severely distressed properties and creating safe, habitable homes.

Duties and Responsibilities: The Assistant Attorney General will work directly with cities and towns to renew abandoned and blighted properties, creating safe and habitable homes. Using both litigation and non-litigation tools, the AAG will work with local officials to develop strategies to prompt delinquent or absentee owners to repair and rehabilitate residential properties that pose dangers to the public, participate in property inspections and code enforcement activities, and act as lead attorney in receivership actions. The AAG will be assigned to work with a variety of municipalities, most of which will be outside of the Boston metropolitan area and may require travel throughout the Commonwealth, including Northern, Central, and possibly portions of the Western regions. This position requires an ability to interact with a variety of members of the public, including court staff, public officials, property owners, neighbors, and other members of the communities we serve. In addition, this position will require a significant amount of court appearances and may require some coverage of geographic regions beyond assigned municipalities. As NRD expands its work, there may be opportunities for work on policy issues related to housing and community development in the Commonwealth.

Job Qualifications:
Two to five years of full-time legal experience, including civil trial experience, is preferred. Proficient analytical, organizational, writing, and oral advocacy skills are essential. Must be able to travel to communities across the Commonwealth and regularly appear in court in areas outside of Boston. We seek an individual who can work both independently and as part of a team and is committed to practicing law in the public interest. We seek an individual with an interest in and ability to relate to people from a broad spectrum of backgrounds. Must be a member of the Massachusetts Bar with a valid Massachusetts driver's license. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a commitment to working for the public interest, a connection to the people and communities we serve, and an interest in supporting a respectful, diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment. Our current hybrid model includes some remote workdays for most positions.
